Vlog of Who, What, Where, is Our Nineveh? Jonah 1-4

Who, What, Where is Our Nineveh?

I have studied Jonah and tried to understand his choice to run.
Jonah was charged with the task to go and tell a message from the LORD so that a nation could be saved from destruction.
He did not want to tell or go where the Lord was leading him.

Jonah rose up and fled from God’s presence, or so he thought.
Yet as noted in Psalm 139, there is no place that God will not or cannot reach you.

One of the things that I have noted on this scripture journey is that the goodness of God is an opportunity for you and I.
How will we use our opportunity?
Will we run toward God or run from God?
Jonah decided to run from God, definitely not a wise choice.
At first glance, Jonah appears very selfish and judgemental, yet even before his three days in darkness Jonah shows he has compassion.
His compassion is shown toward his fellow boat mates, they are floundering spiritually, as well as physically. Why does he feel kinship with them and not the Ninevites?
Is it because they are in the same boat?

As I read Jonah, I realize that I will become confused by looking at man instead of God. Man changes and has his own agenda, which is usually opposite of God’s plan.
So, a brief look at Jonah quickly tells me to keep my eyes on Jesus, the Light of the world.

Jonah 1:6 So, the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call, upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.
Jonah 1:12  And he said, unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

Jonah noted. The issue at hand was caused by his disobedience and chose to die rather than submit to God‘s leading.
God was patient.
God is very patient with us.

In God’s mercy, he did not allow Jonah to perish, but took him to the end of himself.
Running away from the presence of God puts us in a dark place.
Yet, repentance brings us to His light.

Jonah 2:10  And the LORD spake onto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

*Note God’s mercy. The LORD spake unto the fish.

Jonah 3:1-2 And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying,
Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.

So Jonah finally obeys and the people repent. But Jonah is not happy, in fact, he was very angry. Why?
His response directs us toward looking up, to take our eyes off of man and his obstinance.
To obey the LORD who said to go and to tell.
Look to God, gracious, merciful, Jehovah God.

Even in Jonah’s “backslid, ain't gonna listen attitude “ he confesses God’s goodness.
This realized goodness of God eventually causes Jonah to repent of his own way of doing things.

As a people who acknowledge our God is good, we also must repent of doing and living in our own way.

Jonah 4:4 Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry?

It is amazing that Jonah feels betrayed by God’s goodness and mercy when it is being extended to others. Jonah acts like a man betrayed. He states he would rather die than live. Jonah is grieved and angry.
Yet, God still does not judge him, but continues to teach him.
Look at God’s tenderness and patience. God prepared a covering, a gourd, to shelter Jonah from the heat as Jonah waited to see what would become of the city.

Jonah 4:6 And the LORD God, prepared a gourd and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.

God is tender towards us, yet wants us to learn, so the next morning….

Jonah 4:7–11 But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.
And it came to pass, When the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, That he fainted, and wished, in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.
Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou has not labored, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:
And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand, and their left hand: and also much cattle?

Has God ask you to reach out in mercy to “a Nineveh,” from your comfortable place?
Are you having a hard time reconciling or obeying?

Who?
What?
Where is our Nineveh?

Platform Transformation

© 2014 Debbie Turner Chavers
1 Peter 5:7
Water-Man Series

Luke 5, opens with the crowd listening to Jesus by the lake of Gennesaret and the people pressed upon Jesus to hear the word of God.
Pressed upon, could have been a crowd or an insistence to hear the word of God.
Two empty ships were standing by with the fisherman cleaning their nets.
Jesus chose Simon’s boat to teach the people from and asked for it to be thrust out a bit from the land.
Jesus sat down and taught the people from “Simon’s platform.“
(Simon’s place of employment)

Simon’s place of making a living was being blessed because of Simon’s agreement and obedience to give or share what he had.

1. We can share our platform, our place of influence with the Lord also.

Obedience brings blessing but it can also bring work. Luke says they were washing their nets when the request from Jesus was received. It doesn’t say whether they were finished cleaning the nets. Jesus’s next request brings about a redo of cleaning the nets.

Luke 5:4
Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.

2. A situation my seem insurmountable to you or others, yet, obey the Lord.

Luke 5:5-7
And Simon answering him said unto him, Master, we have toiled all night, and have caught nothing, nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
And when they had done this, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake,
And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they both began to sink.

Simon and all the others were astonished at the multitude of fish that were caught after their previous work had netted nothing! The blessing brought astonishing profit, yet, a lot of physical effort was still required. Work is work!

3. Obedience brings blessing.

Luke 5:8-11
When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me: for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:
And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not: from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

Your everyday choices make a difference. Determine to look past any perceived lack on your part. God only requires your agreement. You own that.

Father God, thank you for the opportunities that you provide for me to agree with you and your good plan for my life. Father, I pray that the eyes of my understanding be open and my ears be attuned to the prompts, teaching and leading of your Holy Spirit.

Catalyst

© 2005 Debbie Turner Chavers Psalm 30:5

There are catalyst in every persons life.

On June 12, 2019 I was told that my sister had died unexpectedly of a heart attack on the 11th.
Silence.
No more laughter with my sister.
Silence.
No more time or opportunities with her.
Silence.
Until Heaven.

Terri was my younger sister by 11 months.
My only sibling.
We were total opposites in almost everything.
I loved her, the gift of her.
No matter our difference of opinion on almost every subject in life, I was grateful that she was my little sister.
Grief is not always silent.
Silence is not always quiet.
Silence can reverberate with "Why?" or "I don't understand" and
"Help me, God."

And He has.

Loss is hard.
Each loss that has come has been a catalyst. A drawing nearer to my Redeemer.
My questions have not been answered, but as I obey, choice by choice I feel His peace bathe my mind, body, and spirit.
As I tearfully prayed about this loss, I heard the Lord speak to my heart.
He said to quit trying to figure out, the "why" and the "I don't understand."
My flesh wants to wail, to wallow, yet I have been told to acknowledge each fragment of grief with gratitude.
I am obeying.
God is comforting me in the process.
Moment by moment as I remember Terri, I verbalize and think about her with gratitude.
Even the difficult moments of our relationship.

I hope sharing this helps someone as they walk through their own grief process.

Father God, thank you.
~Debbie

Philippians 1:3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you.

Prophesy

© 1999 Debbie Turner Chavers

1 Samuel 10:6 And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shall be turned into another man.
And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.

These Old Testament verses brought my attention back to the New Testament promise found in Acts 2.

Acts 2:17-21 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see vision, and your old men shall dream dreams:
And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

*Receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit will change you if you will receive Him.
As you read about Saul and his journey to becoming a king, you can see how his anointing and obedience played out in his everyday life and choices.
Even though a change had happened within him, he hid from it.

We all have baggage we hide in. (1 Samuel 10:22)
COME OUT.
God will not force our repentance. We are given the choice to choose Him.

1 Samuel 10:1 Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

We too have been on a journey and God has sent His only begotten Son to anoint us to be a captain over his inheritance.
He has given you every good thing

We too have been made kings and priests unto our God.
Consider Revelation 1:5-6
And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, washed us from our sins in his own blood,
And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen

*Today you have a choice. You can receive the gift of repentance and change into a new creation.
 God will receive you.
Jesus said in John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me: and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

Jesus said in John 20:21-23
Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.
And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.
