Choices

" Choices"
copyright © 1999 Debbie Turner Chavers

I painted this picture many years ago after reflecting on the scripture in Joshua 24:15
Joshua 24:15  And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

Every day a person is given the opportunity to choose whom they will serve. As I thought on this scripture I was standing at my kitchen sink washing dishes early one morning and this was the image I saw in my mind.
There is a door and a path that leads to the light and there is a path and a door into darkness.
I am asking you to choose the Light, Jesus Christ.

John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
If you look at the painting you will see that the lit side is narrower than the broad path to destruction. The young man stands betwixt the two choices and I have painted him turned to the light.

Matthew 7:13  Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

Matthew 7:14  Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

God loves you very much, do not hesitate, today is the day to choose life.

Life Line- The Word and Blood of Jesus Christ, Do Not Let Go

Life Line-The Word and Blood of Jesus Christ, Do Not Let Go

Proverbs 4:13  Take fast hold of instruction; let [her] not go: keep her; for she [is] thy life.

The red rope represents the blood and the Word of God, it has Jesus, Proverbs 4:13 written in it and Do not let go.
No matter what you may face. God has promised to be with His children. Hold tightly unto His word. Regardless of apparent darkness, His Word, Jesus Christ, the light of the world will sustain you.

Do not let go of His Word.

Get in agreement with God and His Word. Say what He says. Do not let go of His Word.
Through the shed blood of Jesus Christ and the application of His word, He will sustain you.

Here are more scriptures to consider.
Revelation 12:10  And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
Revelation 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

Job 5:8 I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:

Matthew 26:28  For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
1 John 1:7  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Revelation 1:5  And from Jesus Christ, [who is] the faithful witness, [and] the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

Revelation 1:6  And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him [be] glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Are You Thirsty?

John 7:37   In the last day, that great [day] of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

John 4:14   But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Did you hear Him? If you are thirsty for living water, accept what He is so willingly offering you.
Life everlasting. Are you thirsty?

Man Shall Not Live by Bread Alone

"Man Shall Not Live by Bread Alone "

Luke 4:4  And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

Jesus suffered many things while here on the earth. After 40 days of being tempted by the devil, he was hungry.

I love to eat on my screened back porch during warm weather. One day as I was enjoying lunch at my small bistro table, I decided to read some of God's word as I ate my lunch. The afternoon sun was shining across my hand as I lifted the fork to my mouth. I saw my hand and fork as a shadow across the pages I was reading at that time and I heard this scripture in my heart.

Daily as we interact with the Lord, He speaks to us in our everyday life. Look around you and your situation. What is He speaking to you in His word. Take the time to feed at His table.

I have never left hungry.

In the painting the blue represents the water(sea of Tiberius), the loaf and the grain represents the written Word. The red bowl, represents Jesus Christ's shed blood.

Close-up of grain with scriptures.

Mark 1:16,17,18  Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.
And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.

John 21:15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
John 21:16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
John 21:17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

In the scriptures of John 21, Jesus reminds his disciples (children) of their first job. Simon Peter and many of the disciples were fisherman.
Jesus, gently reminded Simon Peter of what he was to be doing. He asked Simon Peter three times "lovest thou me?" Simon Peter had denied Christ three times and when Jesus returned after His resurrection He gave him the opportunity to confess his love for Him these three times.

After Jesus was crucified they returned to fishing.
Simon Peter was to be a fisher of men not a fisherman.

Amos 3:3  Can two walk together, except they be agreed?

After much thought,I wrestled in my mind for an answer to a problem I was considering. I received an answer when the Lord showed me this picture. I had just finished washing some sneakers and was laying them out to dry when I noticed how I had placed them on the dryer.

I realized the root of the problem was that I was going in the wrong direction! As I considered this, I heard the scripture Amos 3:3 in my heart.
If you are going in the wrong direction. Turn around.
God hasn't left you, He is just facing the other way.

Jonah Gone Fishing

Original water color painting "Jonah Gone Fishing" copyright © 2005 Debbie Turner Chavers

After studying the book of Jonah in the Old Testament, chapters 2 and 3, I saw Jonah differently. I did not give Jonah a face because I believe Jonah represents many of us at different times of our life. His staff is in the shape of a cross, because he went to Nivenah to deliver them by his preaching. His obedience caused him to be saved out the belly of a great fish. The seaweed represents the actual seaweed that wrapped around his head and the cords of disobedience that did have him trapped.

When he repented, he was delivered and so was a city full of people bound for destruction.

Acts 1:11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

I painted the flash light red to represent Jesus Christ's shed blood as our covering. We are told through out scripture to share the light of God's word. But how can anyone believe if they are never told. You have the opportunity daily to shine forth into the darkness.

Be a Light.

These are a few of the scriptures. There are 272 scriptures in the King James bible for light.

Acts 13:47  For so hath the Lord commanded us, [saying], I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.
Romans 10:14  How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Matthew 5:14  Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Matthew 4:16  The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up

Ezekiel 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

I saw this picture as the Word of God pierced my cold heart. God's word melts the hardness of sin from your heart, mind, and body as you allow it too. The first step is to acknowledge your need and then ask Him to be your Saviour and fill you with His living Word.

Hebrew 4:12  For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

God Sees Us Naked

Hebrews 4:13  Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

Isaiah 61:10  I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.

Our perception of how God sees us, varies from individual to individual.
God showed me that no matter how I was dressed. He sees my nakedness.
He sees your nakedness.
We dress in our facades with one another. Yet God sees us naked.
Everything about us is visible to His eyes, He saw our need for His covering and has provided that covering, through the shed blood of Jesus Christ.
He has given us garments of salvation and a robe of righteousness.

Isaiah 43:2  When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

During a time of trouble the Lord showed me this image concerning what was happening in the situation spiritually. He showed me a man who was in a fire but felt no harm. It was raining down upon him from heaven like a shower. I saw the image as I have painted it. The fire was underneath and he appeared to be in the chimney pipe. The fire raged and he washed in the water that was pouring upon him from heaven. He was protected. In the natural, this could not occur without God's provision.

Do not be amazed or fearful of fiery trials. God will be with you.

Psalm 30:5 For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.

Many years ago, after a period of deep distress where I wept a lot, the Lord comforted me with this image. I felt His peace pour over me and I heard in my spirit this scripture.

This picture never fails to remind me of His promise and the comfort He brought.
Take hope, the morning will come.

John 1:14  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
Matthew 11:19  The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a wine bibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children

John 19:5  Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!

Throughout scripture and history you can hear man saying "Behold the man!" As a believer, Jesus Christ is the Risen, only begotten Son of God. I see Him as this picture. He was made flesh, and His word fleshes out my image of Him.

As you study the Word of God, you also can begin to see Him as He rises from the ashes of your unbelief.

Because No Man is an Island

"Because No Man Is An Island"
copyright © 1997 Debbie Turner Chavers

As we live out our life, at times it is easy to separate ourselves from our brothers and sisters in Christ. But we are needed and must open our hands for God to fill them. Hebrews speaks of assembling ourselves. I have had many tell me that they believe this is attending church.

And so it is. Yet we are the building, the temple that He desires to fill. We are the living church, the container of His love, the members of His body.

More than mortar, a building of bricks. We are the body, the Bride of Christ.

Hebrews 10:25  Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some [is]; but exhorting [one another]: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
1 Corinthians 12:27  Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

1 Corinthians 12:12  For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also [is] Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:13  For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether [we be] Jews or Gentiles, whether [we be] bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12:14  For the body is not one member, but many.

You are not an island. You are needed.

Enough

Throughout scripture this word is used to mean several things. When I was given the picture it represented one thing to me and now many years later, I can see many scriptures in it.
There are 32 scriptures in the King James Bible that contain the word enough.
The scripture references start at Genesis 24:25 and end at Acts 27:38.
I think the picture will mean a specific thing to you when you see it. Regardless of where you are in your walk.
God is always Enough.

Acts 1:4,5  And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Isaiah 64:8 But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

If you study the pots, you will notice that each is a different shape and color. Each one is imperfect.
This is on purpose, for it represents each of us.

Psalm 119:105 Thy word [is] a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

This picture has very much faded over the years. I will be painting it fresh with the original concept later, but I wanted to share the image and scripture now.

We are all on a journey and the path can be hard to find at times. The comfort of God's word will always lead you in the right direction.

Even though the gentleman in the picture is quite elderly, the path is still long and the light will last until he finally arrives safe and sound at home. He is walking toward his sunrise in the sunset of his life.

May the peace of God and the light of His word illuminate your path and bring you safely home.

Sabbath Man?

Mark 2:27,28  And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

In every mans life, he must consider the gift of time. We fill our time with activities. The spirit needs rest. Time to reflect. Think of water. Endless activity on the surface causes the image to be distorted. It can not reflect unless the surface is still. Leisure time is a gift, yet your soul needs stillness.
I named this painting "The Sabbath Man?" because I saw the image above on a Saturday morning right before I got out of bed to start my day.

The Love of Money is the Root of All Evil

" The Love of Money is the Root of All Evil "
copyright © 2010 Debbie Turner Chavers

1 Timothy 6:10  For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Original sketch of "Love of Money", copyright © 1996 Debbie Turner Chavers

Many years ago I was shown this picture as I studied 1 Timothy 6:10. Money is a tool, that can be used for great good when its value is understood. We are blessed with many tools to get the job done. Yet, anything that we love more than God is an idol that will cause great sorrow in the time to come if we are not submitted in our choices.

Money is just a tool, not evil in itself. Anything becomes evil by the love of it replacing the love of God in your heart.

Psalm 68:19  Blessed [be] the Lord, [who] daily loadeth us [with benefits, even] the God of our salvation. Selah.

1 Timothy 6:17-19  Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

Obviously, God desires to bless us and provide well for us. But things, people, or money are never to usurp God's place in our affections.

The Prodigal and Family

The Prodigal and Family
copyright © 2010 Debbie Turner Chavers

The Prodigal is an example of choices and God's redeeming love for you and I. Most people at one time or another identify with being the prodigal son, but I want you to notice the pouting eldest son. It is hard to watch someone else use and abuse the mercy of God and not be offended, even as the elder son was offended. To work day in day out to do the right thing and still see it rain on the just and the unjust. But there is a need to remember that all that He is, all that He has, He has given to us, to those who would call upon His name and walk in fellowship with Him.

Luke 15: 31, And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.

The very thing that causes me to worship God because of His goodness to me, makes it hard to understand the choice that He gives us all. The ability to chose, even if the choice is wrong.

God has no desire to see His children suffer, to be in want, to waste their inheritance. So chose life.

John 14:6  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

I love where scripture says in Luke 15:17, And when he came to himself.
There is a need to recognize our total dependence on God, to come to our self.
That even though He allows us to chose, He is ever wooing us to himself and waiting with open arms to welcome us home after we repent from going our own way.

If you are the prodigal, repent and come home, God is waiting with open arms.
If you are the elder son, repent and enjoy the bounty of the Father, who has given all good things unto you.

~Debbie

Matthew 5:45  That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

The parable of the prodigal:

Luke 15:11-32  And he said, A certain man had two sons: And the younger of them said to [his] father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth [to me]. And he divided unto them [his] living.
And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.
And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.
And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.
And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,
And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.
And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put [it] on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on [his] feet:
And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill [it]; and let us eat, and be merry:
For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.
Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing.
And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.
And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.
And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him.
And he answering said to [his] father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:
But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.
And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.
It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

James 4:7  Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

We are called to be submitted to God first in all things. We are not to manipulate one another by our own desires. We have been set free in Christ Jesus. We are no longer bond servants to sin.
Each person is responsible to control themselves and answer to God. We were granted self-control (temperance) by the Holy Spirit, not remote control.
Many years ago I found myself in a situation where I had to prayerfully consider if my actions would be as unto the Lord or if I was being manipulated by the situation and people involved.
After prayerful consideration I realized that submission and manipulation were different issues. If we submit unto God, then His word clarifies the power struggle and its source.

Please, Fix It

Many years ago as I prayed, I saw this image of a child holding a broken heart. All the pieces were there but it was in pieces. As I prayed for healing, I realized, He was asking me to bring Him all the pieces. Not just the big parts, but every little shattered piece. He can and will restore your heart. But you must give it to Him.All of it.  Just as He showed me this child's tears and upturned face, this is what HE requires of us.
Bring Him all the pieces of your broken heart, withhold nothing.
